Let’s thank all the tree for the give us a place to put our pop and chicken
I think it’s an especially thrilling day when I see evidence of people thinking bit, especially in small ways.
A small building was being refurbished in la Sabana park. I watched as los muchachos repaired holes. In the restoration, they had to take down a few trees. There’s also been some storms that have whipped through the park, and a few large trees became stumps.
The simple act of turning these trees into a picnic table makes me giddy. I sometimes get frustrated when I see the world of chaos and poverty and crime and feel like there is nothing I can do to change it. Then there’s this picnic table. It reminds me of the story by Shel Silverstein about the Giving Tree. We all know the tale of a tall, beautiful apple tree that just kept on giving and giving and giving until it became a stump. Even then, the tree had something to give, a place to rest for the boy he loved so much.
Sure, the wood could have been cut up and hauled for firewood or made into a a door frame for a house across town. Instead, someone spent the time cutting the trunk right there. No need to haul it, thus we’ve saved gas. No extra person power to lift it (and imagine how heavy it is!) and now it can serves oodles of families, splayed open and inviting - perfect for that pot of arroz con pollo and Fanta orange at picnics.
I’ve always believed that small acts of kindness could change the world. But as I grow older (….and wiser…) I have completely changed. I no longer believe this. I KNOW it. The difference? It may be too small to measure but too great to miss. Trees give us so darned much, we should be kind and happy and generous just to pay back all the oxygen they spit out. And let’s not forget to mention the beauty, the fruit, the shade, the……
Who wants to take that chance of offending a tree? Do those little acts of kindness all day long and you watch, and the world must change. The trees shall thank us because all they really want to do is share.
